Mum's First Hound, Colt
November 4th 2009 06:45
Colt was mom's first greyhound and has been mom's mystery since he left*(see note below) her. Mom always talks about him with a little catch in her voice. She loved him very much and when he left it broke her heart. Thankfully she had enough love to be able to adopt me.
But, that's not what I'm writing about. I wanted to tell everyone about mom's hunt. Mom has been looking, hunting, for brothers and sisters of Colt almost forever. But you see she couldn't get help from the group she adopted him from because they had changed so much in the 10 years since she adopted him. They didn't have the same people running it and some of its older records were not available.
Mostly she couldn't get his proper, racing name. Without that she couldn't find out anything about his background. But this last week a friend, who had been hunting, and knew how to do it, found out his name. It was Getum Harley. I think that was a silly name and so does mom. She says that Colt fit him much better.
But finding this was a good thing since he has ½ sisters and brothers who had pups so he has nephews and nieces out there who are young enough to be available for adoption, maybe. She's looking into that.
Mostly I'm writing this for my friends, Heidi and Clyde, and Daisy and Scratchy. The news that I love is that mom's Colt has a bunch of Australians in his pedigree. Yeah, honest. They aren't all that recent, but they are there. Mom's Colt was part Australian! Mom thinks it would be great to find out if any of them had the same great-great-great grand sires and dams as Colt. I do too. Then we could really say that we were related.
OK, I'm not a greyhound, and my ancestors aren't Australian but since I'm Colt's sister, after him, I could claim that relationship for him. So there!
Anyway, I thought maybe this would help Heidi and her Mum and take their minds off of Clyde's problems.
Below are some of the hounds that Colt was related to, from Australia.
Tell You Why
Max Moss
Rocket Jet
Mar Heat
Mireeka
Some Signess
Tumblebug, and even more but way back.
His dam mostly had ancestors from Ireland and some from England. His sire had a couple from England but mostly the Australian ones I listed above.
Hunting from my greyhound relatives is so much fun. It keeps mom so busy that she doesn't notice that Max and I have snuck into the studio to sun bathe in the front windows. Well she doesn't notice until I forget myself and bark at someone passing by, or Max starts. They she notices and tells us to get out of there. But if we just get quiet she goes back to looking for dogs in Colt's background. It's kind of funny and cute. Mom can be so silly.
A couple of funny pictures of Colt are scattered in the post. Mom said that she didn't have a good camera when she took them. I don't care I still think they're really silly but in a good way. She was playing with them too and made funnier pictures, but not good ones. She told me I couldn't put them in but I did, I snuck most of them into the post so she wouldn't notice. She said this one was awful, but I don't care. Colt was very possessive of his toys.
*Note: If you don't understand, we, poodle dogs, don't use the “d” word. We call what happened either left, passed, ran away, but never the “d” word. Colt was hit by a truck. It ran him over, never slowing down. Mom had been sick and was in a nursing home when this happened. She could barely handle the shock and the pain. He was only five years old, his birthday had been less than two weeks before the accident. I know she still misses him, like we both miss Gem and Zeus.
